Sexuality and spirituality have been artificially separated from each other for centuries in Western culture. The differentiation of the body from the mind as a concept has had profound effects on our mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional well-being. In the past 100 years or so, Eastern philosophies and practices such as Tantra have made their way to the West, but the basic tenets are often lost through cultural appropriation and also in translation.

This course will discuss some eastern concepts of Tantra and how they made their way to the West as well as Western views and practices of sacred sexuality, and offer some ways that we can practice intimacy and spirituality without appropriation.

By the end of this course participants will be able to:
1) Recognize at least 3 basic tenets of Himalayan Tantra.
2) Discern at least 1 way in which eastern Tantra has been culturally appropriated in the West.
3) Recognize the dynamic and holistic nature of the four energies of Yin, Yang, Tapas, and Spanda.
4) Discuss a 4-dimensional model of ourselves and how sexuality fits into the model.
5) Create definitions of spirituality that are inclusive of sexuality.
6) Practice several breath exercises for use in connecting to self and a partner/s.
7) Evaluate how sacred sexuality exercises and concepts can be of use when working with clients or students.
